- We remember the double exclamation points you put on the southern tip of Manhattan.
- We remember feeling we were home upon seeing you even though we had miles to go to get there.
- We remember the beautiful September morning on the day of the attacks.
- We remember we couldn't believe our eyes or the subsequent heartbreak we felt.
- We remember the smell in the air and silence in the sky, except for the fighter jets flying overhead.
- We remember the 2,974 innocent people who were killed and the 24 missing in New York City, the District of Columbia and Shanksville, and their loved ones.
- We remember the first responders who have died and continue to develop illnesses as a result of their efforts to make things better.
- We remember the love and support for the United States from around the world.
- We remember why so much of that support has since evaporated.
- We remember like it was yesterday.
- We always will.

Yes, we will always remember. It was a day similar to today. Bright and crisp. The horror of that morning as I got to work in the Empire State Building unaware of what was happening less than a mile away. The horror of watching a tower fall from a rooftop safe on 33rd and Madison knowing that hundreds, if not thousands died in that moment. It's one of the most real feelings I've ever experienced, and it's my hope that I never will know that shock and sadness again.
ReplyDeleteYou've worded all of this so perfectly, Cindy.
ReplyDeleteI remember, too, and like so many always will. I can't believe it's been seven years now. My friend Sue and I had just flown home from NYC the day before after completing the NYC Century Bike Tour. We'd originally planned to fly home on the 11th and changed our plans just before we left. I'd already planned to take that day off from work so was home when I watched the events unfold, staring at my television in complete disbelief as the tears began to flow.
Thanks for a great post of remembrance.
Oh, Cindy and Scott, thank you for this beautiful homage to the devastation of that day. I remember being at school when I saw it happen on TV. I had a girl friend just blocks away from the site that saw the dust in the air.
ReplyDeleteI will remember.
we'll remember forever. nice tribute.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely tribute Cindy... We still lived in the city then and like so many, will never forget what that time was like.
ReplyDeleteThank you for expressing it so well.

stunning post my friends...puts a big lump in my throat...thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'm late on this, but I agree - a day we will all remember for years and years. I was in NC during this time, but I remember the shock of watching it unfold on TV.
ReplyDeleteJust catching up too...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tribute Cindy and Scott. I vividly remember getting the call from my mom to alert me to the events unfolding on TV. Having just been to NYC two weeks prior, I watched in complete disbelief and sadness. I remember shaking from head to toe, completely petrified about our future and that of my 9 month old daughter, sleeping peacefully in my arms.
It literally felt like the sky was falling around us. I can only imagine the horror of actually being in NY at the time. Thank you for sharing.
thank you so much for sharing your memories of that day. they are special to us.
ReplyDeletevery nice tribute. i remember how i heard about the attacks. i remember calling both of my kids right away just to talk and hear their voices. september 11th is my daughter's b'day so it is very eery for us.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful tribute. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeletethank you julie and suzanne.
ReplyDeleteThis was beautiful, and very well written. A fitting tribute. It really doesn't seem like it was 7 years ago. I just remember seeing the 24 hour coverage, and having news crews follow people who were looking for their missing loved ones. Seeing them post pictures of their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, and acquaintances, just hoping they were alive buried in that rubble. How horrible.
ReplyDeletethank you teal chic - we were constantly going into the city in the days afterward and that was one of the most difficult experiences. there were signs everywhere and i believe it was with a heavy heart when they were taken down, although they were preserved.
ReplyDeleteWe certainly will remember. It brings tears to my eyes everytime I see footage of this horrible horrible day.
