home : the domestic arts

the only thing i made in these photos is the camera strap, but i ironed just about everything.

ever since my photography class finished i've been able to get back to sewing. it's such a rewarding craft as it is creative and functional, but does involve lots of math and ironing. my mom thought of ironing as an art form and would turn the laura ashley dresses i wore into things of beauty with each ruffle just so. although i don't really make him anything, scott seems to like when i sew, too. maybe it's because i usually ask him to check my calculations?

one project i was intent on making this summer was an apron. i never found the orla kiely version in target and was looking through a kitchen drawer for one i had to use as a pattern. i found it and three others that my mom made. i completely forgot about them! i washed and ironed each one and they are almost too pretty to use. the blue gingham one above is smocked, which is something i really love. i'm thinking i'll make one dish per apron, which will make scott really happy. not sure how long it will take me, but i hope not too long.

instead of the apron, i made a patchwork camera strap cover using alicia's tanglewood fabric squares pre-cut to the perfect size (thank you!) and her wonderful tutorial. i didn't realize it, but i seem to collect a lot of patchwork. not sure what to make next. any ideas?

hope you all have a nice weekend!

xo, cindy

ps i've gotten so lazy this summer, i don't seem to be able to use capital letters.

  1. What a cute idea making an unique camera strap! Love it. And zombies are very creepy I agree, but Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is hilariously written if that helps make the flesh eating a little more light hearted for you ; )
    Have a splendid weekend!!!

  2. ha, i seldomly use capital letters as well. i like to think of it as letter equality ;)

i love the camera strap. i wish i knew how to sew, my mom knows how, she used to sew together teddy bears in a facotry when she lived in south korea... but i never learned. i can barely even sew on a button...one day, one day i will get it right :)

    and
the photos and styling are gorgeous.
there is something so satisfying about the craft of sewing-- i love it for the same reasons i love printmaking-- the perfect blend of left & right brained-ness (not sure if that's a word yet).

  5. WOW Cindy! The lighting and color and composition of each and every photo is soooooo beautiful - love these! I'm jealous of your ironing skills too - LOL! I love your aprons - and how wonderful that they came from your mother! Your camera strap is *awesome* and if you are such a lover of patchwork, why not still make that apron you wanted to but make it a patchwork one???

i love the caption in your photos.... hehe too cute! and i think the strap is beautiful!!! i have over 20 aprons and i rarely use them because they are too beautiful to use... one is like wearing a dress!!! isabella is fond of aprons now too and diego has a boy one so we have a couple to sport... i think you should make curtains :D that would be a hefty project? your kinda curtains would make any person's studio MUCH more creative and beautiful!!!!

i dont use caps either but its cuz i like the way it looks... i think upper case i's are hideous... well, i think i like all lower case letters to upper... hehe

    happy monday, girl!
