craft : think hard


pretty & ugh!

hi all - hope you had a good weekend! i hesitate to post this one, but we've got to keep it real. as mentioned last week, sometimes my projects get messed up. actually, i don't know who i think i am as i'm really a beginner sewer, but i don't like to use formal patterns. at least, i didn't. so, i wanted to make some pajama bottoms to wear with t-shirts. i was going to use the old tattered pair i've had for a while as a guide and purchased beautiful seersucker fabric from b & j fabrics.

i rushed home, turned my pjs inside out and got busy. i was so proud that i realized i should turn them inside out to get the full size. well, the pride ended there. i forgot to take into account that the waist was ELASTICIZED (doh!) and after sewing everything together, it was so tiny. i realized my mistake and didn't know what to do.

eventually, i figured i could add a piece, but it forms a V. you know what I'm saying and see where it's pointing? it also accentuates my tummy kind of like maternity pants. i'm bummed. i suppose i could cut off the legs and make a new top part, but i'm sure the legs are not exactly the same size and that would be a nightmare. some bolsters for our sleigh bed might be nice ;).

    Hmm, I'm feeling so sorry for you... I know the feeling too well of a project gone wrong...
    Do I get it right when I say you added the triangular part at the center of the pants? If so, couldn't you take it out again and add it at the sides instead (the hips)? That way you won't have the bump. You could even add a little trim so it would look as "faux" pockets... Just an idea. It would be sad to have the nice fabric waisted...

    tiny pillows sound pretty good? it's very pretty fabric...and hooray for you for keeping it real!!! i love keepin' it real sister! also, sewing is hard...

    I love the honesty of this! You know what would make a great blog site? Projects gone wrong. Maybe one site for home improvement projects and another for sewing and another for crafting and another for parenting...etc.

    Sounds like a joke, but it could be one of those blogs with many contributors. It could show where things went wrong and how to avoid making the same error. It would be something we could all relate to!

    thanks, everyone! sewing is hard, but there's always the next project and learning from your mistakes. i know i will be able to make a correct pair from start to finish with my own pattern, now.

    i like your idea, pascale. i might be able to do it and do love the fabric. i don't want to see it wasted, either. i'll come up with something nice.

    pj's idea for a blog sounds like a good one. i think there would be many submissions ;).

    Hee Hee, at least it made for a cute/funny post :) I did that with a skirt that I made from a pattern. I thought I cut the right size for me, and when I got to putting on the waist band on, I went, wait this looks a bit small. Sure enough, it looks like it would fit my daughters wait and not mine! So I didn't even finish it, I was so mad at my self! I have a friend that this might fit though, but I have to now alter the hip area, since she is smaller than me.
    You feel so defeated though huh?!

    aww, it's a shame that happened. But you're not alone...I know there have been plenty of times that I've wrecked/screwed up a craft project. Hopefully this experience will help you out next time and you can then make perfectly sewn clothes :)
