garden : emily's floral poetry

Emily Dickinson's Garden

fame is a bee,
it has a song -
it has a sting -
ah, too, it has a wing.

- emily dickinson

hello, hello! the emily dickinson garden at the new york botanical garden is such a delight. a few years ago they had a similar display for charles darwin and i think the two would have made a lovely couple. happy mother's day to the experienced moms, new moms, moms to be, and anyone who acts like one (nurturers).

enjoy your weekend!

xo, cindy

ps have you seen the new magazine from jeanette of fryd + design? it's gorgeous!

Emily Dickinson's Garden
they recreated emily's house and had her poems displayed throughout the garden. i didn't realize she was such an avid gardener and was reminded of celia thaxter's wonderful book an island garden.

Emily Dickinson's Garden
i'm trying to include people in my photos because, unlike martha stewart, i don't get private tours. plus, people make it more, well, human. usually i get their backsides, but sometimes i'm lucky.

Emily Dickinson's Garden
sweet peas, fuchsia, pelargonium and hyacinth. my mom loved fuchsia plants, but had no luck with them. she would bring home the most lush plant and before you knew it all the buds would fall off.

Emily Dickinson's Garden
these peonies and roses are yet to open, so we must go back ;)!

Emily Dickinson's Garden
the vegetable garden was delightful and so thoughtfully designed. loved the corn.

Emily Dickinson's Garden
doesn't that guy on the left look like woody allen?

Emily Dickinson's Garden
pansies, columbines, poppies and delphiniums.

Emily Dickinson's Garden
i love people in hats, so if you're wearing a hat, beware!

  4. your wish is my command, line! sounds like a plan!

to lose the haze i sometimes get from digital images and make them more vibrant, i increase the black in auto levels & the contrast. that's where i go wrong sometimes by doing it too much. can't help myself ;)!

  6. it was crazy that day. we think people were giddy because it was so warm and sunny. i wish i could get into the conservatory before all the people to capture the wide angle views, which are so pretty. i like people in the photos, but perfectly place and not too many ;)!

  15. Thank you for these! What a cute house Emily D had. And that garden! Swooooooon. Incidentally, I read that Darwin's family was very inbred, so much so that a lot of family members were sterile.

And the PEONIES! One of my most favorite of all. I don't blame Scott at all for buying them, fully open or not. I would have done the same. Dang, why can't I find any here. :(

I adore hats...I try to avoid the sun as much as possible, until they invent spf 1000!, I'd wear my big hat in the garden...

  19. I'm just sitting here *stunned* at how beautiful all your photos are Cindy :) The abundance and the vibrancy and the combinations - and even your title "Emily's Floral Poetry"... everything is just BREATHTAKING! The foxglove display by the Woody Allen guy nearly made me fall off the couch. I love your mosaic of the pinks, and I think my favorite is the first photo of the delphinium behind the hydrangea, next to Emily's window. I really love her poetry.

    Love the header too! :)

Happy Mother's Day to you too, oh nurturing friend :) xoxoxo

  25. Gorgeous garden, gorgeous photos! I want to live in that house -- I think there is something so special about a ground floor window looking onto flowers from a garden which borders the house!!
