clean sheet of paper : fresh box of crayons : endless possibilities

Hi Everyone -

It's Friday - hurray! Such an incredible week with so much excitement and goodwill about the election and our democratic process. Today's musical choice comes from the eccentric Australian singer/songwriter, Sia. I was looking at iTunes and saw a free video for her new song Soon We'll Be Found. I took a look and it was incredibly creative just like her. It's full of sign language, hand shadows and glow in the dark neon color. I was also happy to find it on vimeo, which is my first choice for embedded videos as they look good even when not playing.

The lyrics in the song reference being free so I needed a photo to represent the concept metaphorically. I thought a clean sheet of paper and a fresh box of crayons were one form of creative freedom, which was the inspiration behind the photo. Then, I heard that the theme for President-Elect Obama's inauguration is going to be 'A New Birth of Freedom' and bingo! It's a trifecta!

What comes to your mind when you think of creative freedom?

xo, Cindy

just last night i took a whiff of my daughter's crayolas, and to me that's the scent of freedom. i think you can do just about anything with a box of crayolas!

You know what? I just sharpened my 8 yr old son's crayolas last night and I did love doing it. But his box is so used and crumpled already not like the one in your image up there but just the same I find delight even in little things I do for him.

This is such a cool video! I love all the colors she uses!

"Creative freedom" to me: the ability to create anything I find beautiful, attractive, "cool" or interesting and know that without a doubt it has merit and value!

i love your idea of the crayons and the fresh paper..and the video is gorgeous!!!
when i think of creative freedom in the U.S. i think of how far we've come and how far we have to go...i think of the artist's responsibility to explore, and question and put something out there that challenges the givens, that connects us through universals and inspires us to grow better than we ever thought we could be through hard questions or a softening of the heart to let a little light in.

wow...thanks for asking..that felt pretty good!

Crayon's are my favorite coloring method. I love everything about them, their variety of colors, the smell, their smoothness and their coloring texture. Oh and they don't stain :)

Great photo and metaphor Cindy. For me, creative freedom is when I'm brave enough to follow my heart, go for it, and not worry about what anyone else thinks.

P.S. I LOVE the song and video

your haiku really speaks to me. my granddaughter is coming on sunday and we will definitely be spending time in the art room. she likes "messy crafts" as she calls them. to me creative freedom means being allowed to express yourself in the method of your choice without censure, bias or consequence. i feel blessed to have that kind of freedom in my life!

great post,cindy!!!

Yummy picture - sure makes those crayolas look edible. I guess that is why so many kiddos take a bite or two!
